(Blythewood, S.C.) – 7/15/2023 – After 30 years, the Ford Mustang has officially been re-introduced into the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s fleet. The first 3 marked units to hit the streets have been issued to the Upstate, Midlands, and Grand Strand portions of the Palmetto State. Haven’t seen one in-person yet? Don’t worry! We’re told more are on the way.

To some, the addition of the Ford Mustang may seem surprising. However, let us begin by reminding you that operating the Ford Mustang for law enforcement purposes isn’t a new concept. In fact, the Ford Mustang Special Service Package (SSP) was THE coupe of choice in the early 90s. At the time, you couldn’t travel across the United States without stumbling on an agency operating a marked Mustang. A handful of agencies in South Carolina also operated this coupes 5.0L V8 predecessor to include the City of Charleston, Charleston County, Darlington, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and our very own South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Unlike its predecessor, which came equipped with the Whelen Edge 9000 Strobe Lightbar w/ Lo-Pro Speaker, you won’t see this pony coming up behind you in traffic. This Ford Mustang features a Slicktop package that includes the latest and greatest from Federal Signal. The lighting package itself was carefully put together to ensure 3-tiers of visibility, offering an increased level of safety for the Trooper at all times. Oh, and before we forget… Yes! Troopers will still transport suspects in the front seat.

It’s safe to say that the South Carolina Highway Patrol has made considerable investments to its fleet over the past few years. From the introduction to its fleet of new A.C.E. Dodge Chargers, to the return of the iconic Ford Mustang, the Patrol is looking to get your attention. Whether you’re traveling the roadways of the Palmetto State, or looking to change your career, it’s safe to say it’s working. We’d like to extend a very big Thank You to our friends at the South Carolina Department of Public Safety for granting us access to its newest addition.
